Ground Up is a Global Shapers Houston initiative addressing food waste and food insecurity by creating a circular, community-driven system of responsible consumption.
The project transforms household and organizational food waste into nutrient-rich compost that supports local gardens, school programs, and neighborhood green spaces. By promoting sustainable habits and demonstrating how small actions can strengthen the local food ecosystem, the initiative empowers residents to take meaningful climate action.
Through partnerships with community organizations, mutual-aid groups, and educational programs, Ground Up serves as a bridge and a catalyst — expanding reach, connecting resources, and helping build a more resilient and equitable food system for Houston.
By turning food scraps into nutrient-rich compost, we reduce landfill waste while supporting thriving community and school gardens across Houston.
We empower residents with simple, accessible practices that build a deeper understanding of sustainability and responsible consumption.
Through shared composting efforts and local partnerships, we bring neighbors and organizations together to create a more connected, resilient community.
